Health Benefits of Practicing Tai Chi Chuan

We’ve all seen this majestic martial art. Whether it be in a park, martial arts school, community centre or on the big screen. Usually its a group of people moving in perfect sync of slow motion movements together following an instructor. Tai Chi Chuan can be practiced either solo or with a partner or in a large group. However you choose to practice it, one thing is for sure, just how connected, balanced you feel during and after your session.

The roots of Tai Chi Chuan go back to the monasteries of China. Some say as far back as the 12th Century. Though there are different schools of thought on where and who originated it, its roots are deep in health, self defence and philosophy. There are different styles of Tai Chi Chuan which focus on different movements, tempo of movement and size of movement. The term its self actually translates to ‘Supreme Ultimate Boxing’.

From a health prospective, it is one of the best exercises a person can do to help improve over all health. It can be practised by anyone, of any age. Tai Chi helps to develop balance, coordination, muscle memory, lowers blood pressure, increases flexibility and strength as well as reduces stress. Its a wonderful art to incorporate to any other martial art as it too is a self defence. It’s low impact movements make it a perfect choice for seniors, or people recovering from injuries. The meditation and training of the mind while practicing make it a popular choice for those who wish to relieve stress from their lives. Tai Chi Chuan is one of the Internal Chinese Martial Arts. This means it helps to strengthen our life force energy known as ‘Chi’, or ‘Ki’. By strengthening this life force energy we bring balance and wellness to all of our body’s systems.

This Martial Art consists of patterns of movements, connected to breath. These movements can be done at almost any level of difficulty and can also be adapted to someone who needs to adjust the movements for their needs. Each movement or sequence usually has a name or a phrase and the movements consist of stances, hand and foot movements which have self defence techniques hidden within. Many people enjoy the art of Tai Chi Chuan as a wonderful way to relax, get the body moving, keep it flexible and to even learn the meaning behind the movement. Depending on the style and instructor, philosophy may or may not be added into the training. However its roots go back to Taoism and Confucianism and there are some wonderful philosophical lessons to learn as well.
