Teruo Chinen

One of the modern day martial arts masters was Okinawan Goju Ryu’s Teruo Chinen. He was born in 1941, in Japan, to a family with deep martial arts roots. Both his parents, grandfather and uncles were all martial arts practitioners. At a young age, Teruo’s family moved back to Naha in Okinawa after the death of his father. It was here that he began his life long journey in the Martial Arts.

Chinen was very fortunate to have lived extremely close to a famous Karate Master’s dojo- Chojun Miyagi the founder of Goju Ryu Karate Do. It was at this dojo that he began his training. Though training for a short time with Master Miyagi, before his death, Chinen’s primary instructor became one of Miyagi’s senior students, Eiichi Miyazato. After six years of training, he was promoted to Shodan (1st degree Black Belt). Chinen would acheive all the way to 9th Dan before his death in 2015. Another prominent Martial Artist who had a strong influence on a young Chinen, was Morio Higaonna. The two were friends and soon teamed up to open their own dojo and teah in Tokyo.  Higaonna, was said to have had a strong influence on Chinen’s Karate. Chinen gives him credit for teaching him the technical side of Goju Ryu Karate and physical conditioning within in his martial arts training.

Sensei Chinen, soon became quite in demand world wide as a technical adviser and instructor of the Goju Ryu system. Having taken a position in America in Washington, he served as a technical adviser at a school and also became the International Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Do Federation Adviser. In 1984, he went on to open his own organization, known as the Jundokan. To date, the Jundokan is a highly respected organization for Okinawan Goju Ryu Practitioners to be part of. It serves as the head to thousands of members world wide.

Teruo Chinen passed away in 2015, but his legacy lives on in the thousands of students he has taught all over the world. His knowledge and technical skill level is something that kept bringing students back to learn from him throughout the years. He believed in training hard, being in great shape, focusing on the technical side of the art and helped to develop many techniques that can be used in self defense and fighting situations. He was a well rounded martial artist strong in his knowledge of both the technical and philosophical side of his art. Teruo Chinen was a modern day master who continues to gain the respect and following of people from all around the world.
