Larry Tatum, 7th degree black belt, delves into the fact that
Kenpo is all about self-defense, and fast techniques which can
disable an attacker within seconds. He explains the history and
traditions of Kenpo and talks about the kicks of the style being
mainly directed to the lower body to save time. Kenpo’s use of
a wide array of kicks, punches, elbow strikes, knee strikes and
finger strikes are explored. The premise of always being aware
of your surroundings, using what is available as a weapon,
balance, coordination, flow and speed are all a part of the style.
In Kenpo, you never try to select a specific technique in the
middle of a sudden, violent altercation but you just let your body
do what Kenpo training has already ingrained in you, mainly
drawing from your trained subconscious. Tatum introduces the
concepts and principles of the system taught through scripted
scenarios which serve to get you out of tricky situations.
