Full Contact Kickboxing

Full Contact fighting has been around for many, many years. Its roots actually can be traced back to traditional martial arts such as Thailand’s Muay Thai Kickboxing, and Japanese Boxing and Karate. There is something about watching a Full Contact Kickboxing match that brings the reality of the techniques in which a martial artist practices in class. Full Contact Kickboxing is a Sport Martial Art. Many of the most successful kickboxers have roots in a traditional martial art, but they take their training and techniques to a different level with the Full Contact Kickboxing.

The techniques primarily involved are kicking, punching, striking with elbows and knees, joint kicks and in some cases even throwing techniques. A kickboxer must be in top physical shape as it requires a lot of cardio endurance and strength to stay strong in matches. Matches have different lengths of time and different sets of rules depending on where and what organization sets out.

There are several governing bodies for Full Contact Kickboxing, one such one is PKA. Professional Karate Association founded in 1974. This American kickboxing organization held its first World Championships in 1974 in Los Angeles, California. Many terrific fighters were involved with this organization throughout their Kickboxing  careers. Bill ‘Superfoot’ Wallace, The Iceman- Jean Yves Theriault, just to name a couple. In fact, Wallace was the PKA Middleweight Champion for almost 6 years and became famous for his extreme roundhouse and hook kicks. Traditionally his martial arts training consisted of wrestling, boxing, Judo, Tae Kwon Do and Shorin Ryu Karate. Theriault got his fighting name because of the cold stares he became famous for in his kickboxing matches which intimidated his opponents. He too was a PKA Middleweight World Champion and held his crown for 15 years. His martial arts back ground was Muay Thai, Kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu.

The circuit of the kickboxing scene has seen many famous fighters from Joe Lewis and Chuck Norris, to Billy Blanks to Don ‘the Dragon’ Wilson. Their dedication to their training and to their Sport has been inspiration to many up and coming sport martial artists and has had major influence on other Full Contact Sports such as Mixed Martial Arts Fighting. These fighters past and present have opened another door to the world of martial arts. One that demonstrates just how intense and incredible that martial arts techniques and full contact fighting can be.
