Description

Kanazawa Hirokazu was born in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, in 1931. After graduating from Takushoku University in 1958, he entered the first intake of the Japan Karate Association's live-in instructor's course. On graduation he became one of the pioneers of karate's globalisation, living and instructing in Hawaii and throughout Europe. In 1978 he formed the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation, which he still heads. He continues to tirelessly promote karate built on the 'way of harmony', teaching in more than 100 countries around the world. His works include Kumite, Kata, and Stronger Karate in Six Weeks. The last living student of the founder of Shotokan karate, Master Funakoshi Gichin, Kanazawa Hirokazu has dedicated himself to the study and promotion of karate for more than 50 years. This is his story. We follow him from his roots in rural Japan, winning the first JKA Japanese Karate Championships in 1957, and on to his place as one of the prime movers in the globalisation of karate. Now in his 70's, and with a vigour and passion matched by few, he still spends more than half the year teaching the heart and soul of karate to an estimated 2.4 million students in some 106 countries. Throughout he stresses the importance of the way of harmony, and the fact that karate must be relevant to your life to have any meaning. "Karate is what has given me hope throughout my life. It is the teacher that has guided me to where I am now. The more I know, the more I climb, yet the mountain just gets higher. The more I try, the more I focus, the depth is limitless. There is no end in sight. That is karate, my life."
