Osamu Ozawa

Osamu Ozawa 1925 – 1998

“A Leader Who Commanded not Dictated”

He was brought up in accordance with the ancient traditions of the samurai as these were his forefathers. Osamu Ozawa was forced to endure the strict, even brutal, training that was the norm for forging the mind and body into a deadly weapon. His teachers included Gichin Funakoshi, founder of shotokan karate, and Daiichiro Aizawa.

In 1964 he came to Los Angeles, California to sell a film he made on Budo while still in Japan. The film business is tough and no where tougher as he would find out then in LA.

In 1974 he finally moved to Las Vegas and after a short stint working in a casino as a black jack dealer he opened a dojo in 1981. Shortly before opening his dojo he ran a small karate tournament with only 30 competitors to promote the opening of his new dojo.

This tournament has now grown to be one the world’s premier Traditional Open Karate Tournaments in the world held Easter weekend each year in Las Vegas now run by one of his senior students James Tawatao.

Ozawa Sensei once said “Leaders command dictators demand.”
